AUCKLAND, New Zealand - The Junior Navy Blues are back to winning ways following a 2-0 win over Southern United at Kiwitea Street on Sunday afternoon.

The game started off evenly with both teams having a range of first half chances the best falling to Ben Wade which looked like it was going in but a fantastic last ditch intervention from Junior Navy Blues custodian Keegan Ashdown-Inia kept the home side level.

The next good chance fell for Southern United in the 37th minute when Matthew Brazier got a shot away hitting the side netting chances were few and far between and the teams went into the half time break locked at 0-0

Second half started in similar fashion to the first Southern having a number of chances with the most likely coming when a good attacking run from Rahan Ali was cut out by Moses Akimana.

Jack Anderson had an excellent opportunity in the 54th minute when he grabbed possession in front of goal only for Southern custodian Liam Whittaker making an excellent late intervention to keep it out.

Junior Navy Blues finally took the lead in the 83rd minute when substitute Ignacio Machuca fired his free kick past Whittaker to put the home side in front.

The scoring action finished in the 3rd minute of stoppage time as Dino Botica powered home a corner to double the Junior Navy Blues advantage and secure a 2-0 victory.

For head coach Andy Peat it was a job well done “It was a positive performance from the team very impressed with how we retain possession Southern set up in a way that allowed us to have the ball in many periods of the game and we knew it was going to be a battle of attrition”

“In to the second half the focus was not getting frustrated with the amount of possession we were having but not producing today Ignacio coming into the game today was disappointed not to start he had a job to do and did it well”

The Junior Navy Blues continue their National Youth League campaign next weekend when they face Wellington Phoenix Academy on Sunday 20th November at Kiwitea Street kick off at 1:00pm
