AUCKLAND, New Zealand - Reid Drake would like to see Auckland City FC show more control over games as the Northern League season picks up momentum.

The 25-year-old midfielder returned to Kiwitea Street after two seasons with Eastern Suburbs AFC and has been integral in the Navy Blues perfect start to the campaign.

Scoring in his first game back with the club in its 3-1 win over Manukau United, Drake also featured prominently in subsequent wins over Northern Rovers and Hamilton Wanderers.

But rather than get too caught up in the results, he instead prefers to focus on where the Navy Blues need to improve.

"I thought in the win over Hamilton Wanderers we had a very good first 30 minutes and then in the second half we started off well again but we can definitely control games much better than we have so far.

"I think the goals we scored last week and the way we created them came off the back of some very good play that led to capitalising on the set-piece and the penalty," he said.

Drake was an ever-present for the Lilywhites during their recent ISPS Handa Premiership campaigns and he's satisfied so far with how he's adapted to life back at Kiwitea Street.

"I'm happy with the way I've played so far. I always try to do the simple things well and make sure that passes connect.

"Coming back to Auckland City FC has been easy for me, it feels like I never left to be honest.

"I know so many of the boys from having played here before and playing against them that slotting back in has been a breeze," he said.

Auckland City FC face Northern League strugglers West Coast Rangers and Drake sees that game as the ideal opportunity to make sure the Navy Blues get the improvement they desperately want.

"The one work on from the Wanderers game for us has to be to try and control the game for an entire 90 minutes.

"If we can control games from start to finish the way we know we can then we'll be in good shape for the rest of the season," he said.

The match with West Coast Rangers is set for Fred Taylor Park on Saturday 17 April 2021.

The kick-off time is 3.00pm NZDT.
