AUCKLAND, New Zealand - The first round of Northern League action got underway last weekend without Auckland City FC's involvement following the postponement of the match with Bay Olympic.

The opening match day belonged to Western Springs who opened with a big 5-1 win over newly formed West Coast Rangers.

Springs' Sam Margetts and substitute Kaea Rangihaeta each scored a brace to go with Dane Schnell's second half strike to cancel out Ben Hutter's consolation goal.

Former ISPS Handa Premiership semi-finalists found life at regional level rough with a 2-1 home defeat to Malcolm McPherson's North Shore United.

Marko Memedovic netted just before halftime to give Shore the lead before an Adam Davidson own goal doubled the visitor's advantage a minute after the restart. Papua New Guinea international Tommy Semmy scored a late goal to set up a frantic finish.

Birkenhead United enjoy a winning start with Connor Probert and skipper Sam Burfoot on the scoresheet with a goal in each half. Rovers substitute Jaydyn Englefield scored late on but it was United who walked away with a 2-1 victory.

In Hamilton, Melville United and Manukau United produced an eight-goal thriller with Sam Wilkinson's team edging the day, 5-3 at a pristine Gower Park. Melville United led through an early Josh Galletly strike only for former Navy Blues striker Maro Bonsu-Maro to equalise for Kevin Fallon's side within a minute. Jama Boss showed his class and quality with a quickfire double on the half hour mark but former All Whites midfielder Moses Dyer responded to make it 3-2 at the break.

Boss, the former Wanderers and Tasman United forward, added another two goals to make it 5-2 before Dyer netted his second and the visitor's third to make it 5-3.

In the live streamed game of the day, Auckland United FC dumped Eastern Suburbs AFC 2-0 at a bumpy Keith Hay Park with Kingsley Sinclair and Monty Patterson's second half goals enough to leave the Lilywhites defeated and give Hiroshi Miyazawa's United a fitting home bow.
