AUCKLAND, New Zealand - Coach Jose Figueira was happy after Auckland City FC brushed past Waitakere United in warm conditions at Seddon Field today.

Combined with other results, the Navy Blues win sends them to the top of the ISPS Handa Premiership for the first time this season on a day where Jordan Vale made his 50th appearance for the club and former Junior Navy Blues midfielder Aidan Carey made his first team debut.

Figueira was pleased with the margin of victory and thankful other results helped give his side an extra boost with Hawke's Bay United beating Eastern Suburbs AFC 2-1 while Team Wellington and Hamilton Wanderers drew 1-1.

"Really delighted. Strong performance today and a thoroughly deserved win.

"We finished last year with a good result and strong performance and the message this week was to continue build on that and I thought we did that today with a strong performance.

"The attacking players were really good and it was good to see Cam Howieson get on the score sheet from midfield.

"It was good to see the work thats happening on the training pitch and the relationships between the new players slotting is getting stronger.

"When we're focused and connected and believe in how we want to play we can put performances in like that.

"Its always more satisfying when a couple of results in the round go our way and we're back up in the mix where we want to be. "We won't stop, we'll build on what we're doing and get back into things tomorrow at training," he told www.aucklandcityfc.com
