AUCKLAND, New Zealand - Auckland City FC coach Jose Figueira was delighted as the Navy Blues turned in a scintillating show of character in Saturday's 4-1 win over the Wellington Phoenix.

Auckland City FC were on the wrong end of a 1-0 defeat at Canterbury United last week but Figueira got a big response from his team after a difficult first half saw them fall behind to a Riley Bidois goal on the stroke of halftime.

Second half goals from Dylan Manickum (2), Logan Rogerson and Mohamed Awad, helped settle the nerves and the Navy Blues romped to victory in the end.

"Its a great way to finish 2020. Its been coming in terms of the output and the goals. The first half followed a similar pattern to recent weeks where we've controlled and dominated and carved out some incredible good chances but a lack of precision and outstanding goalkeeping.

"I thought Alex Paulsen made three incredible saves because we were potentially out of sight at half time and then we got hit with a sucker punch and suddenly some of those feelings return and confidence drops.

"But testament to the boys they showed that they've given their all, they're working hard and stuck to their guns and their personality and I'm delighted we got the result in the end.

"Its great to have Deandre and others that have been with us for awhile. Its extremely competitive squad, a squad of real quality - these players get their opportunities because they deserve it.

"Deandre has been one of them and there are a couple of others bubbling away underneath as well. I'm delighted for him to keep progressing.

"I'm also delighted for the players who scored - another couple for Dylan and especially Mo (Mohamed Awad), I thought he was outstanding today and getting right back up to the levels we expect from him.
