HAMILTON, New Zealand - A first half Derek Tieku brace has handed Hamilton Wanderers an historic f2-0 win over Auckland City FC today.

Tieku was on target twice in the space of 12 minutes to put Auckland City FC ruthlessly to the sword to give Wanderers a 2-0 halftime advantage.

The Navy Blues horrible form in Hamilton continued with back-to-back defeats to Wanderers at Porritt Stadium including last month's 2-1 pre-season friendly defeat.

Auckland City FC dominated the ball for long periods but their lack of cutting edge up front hurt the visitors who were missing Emiliano Tade and Logan Rogerson.

With former golden boot Myer Bevan now playing professionally in South Africa with TS Galaxy, Auckland City FC were essentially shorn of their three first choice front runners and were made to pay.

Auckland City FC created two good chances to score in the first half then wasted three more in the second as Wanderers won their first ever competitive game against the Navy Blues in nine outings.

Auckland City FC · Disappointing day at Porritt - Figueira

Coach Jose Figueira wasn't avoiding the gravity of the result and admitted it was a hard day at the office.

"That's a tough one to take today after going down 2-0 and a really positive start to the season last week.

"I thought in the first half the goals we conceded were really sloppy and very much our own doing through individual errors and going to sleep inside our own box.

"Top players like Derek mean you have to make sure those moments don't happen. Our build-up play was a little bit slow in the first half and I thought there was a big improvement in the second half with the speed of the game.

"Mentally we had to chase the game and created three key chances and two in the first and if you don't take them you get punished.

"Its a big reminder for us that we need to be clear and precise in both boxes. Both in the way we defend and build up the play and when we create these good chances we have to make sure we take them.

"Its a disapointing day. We wanted to carry on the momentum from last week but there were some good moments which we'll take away.

"We'll keep working hard, keep pushing to get better in all areas. Today was one of those days was a reminder that this year's league could be wide open," he said.
