AUCKLAND, New Zealand - Auckland City FC chairman Ivan Vuksich expressed excitement but urged caution after his club was nominated to participate in the FIFA Club World Cup Qatar 2020 by the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) today.
Auckland City FC have participated in nine FIFA Club World Cup tournaments since 2006 and with the high watermark a bronze medal victory earned in Morocco six years ago but in a world gripped by the uncertainty of the Covid-19 global pandemic he said it was important to proceed carefully.
"There are a lot of logistical challenges that come with participation in a major international tournament and we're going to take our time analysing exactly what that means for us as a club.
"Its important that we balance the understandable excitement this news generates with a pragmatic approach and we're ready to work closely with FIFA, OFC and New Zealand Football to make this a success," Vuksich said.
Last season's OFC Champions League tournament - the usual qualifier pathway for the FIFA Club World Cup - was cancelled following the Covid-19 outbreak but nomination for participation in a FIFA world event, although rare, has happened before with the Solomon Islands, Tahiti and New Zealand teams all benefiting from similar decisions in the past.
"We remain very interested in events as they unfold and I have already reminded everyone involved at Auckland City FC to keep our focus firmly on Sunday's ISPS Handa Men's Premiership match with Hamilton Wanderers," he said.
