AUCKLAND, New Zealand - Auckland City FC will be without captain and club appearance record holder Angel Berlanga after he suffered a serious knee injury at training.

The 33-year-old defender joined Auckland City FC in 2010 and has made 214 appearances scoring eight goals and also scored a memorable equaliser against Copa Libetadores winners San Lorenzo in the FIFA Club World Cup semi-final in Morocco in 2014.

Coach Jose Figueira says the loss of his talismanic leader is a big setback for the player and club but he anticipates a strong recovery from the Kiwitea Street favourite.

"We've had a bit of a blow with regards to Angel Berlanga. This past week he suffered a knee injury at training. It was innocuous and it was something nobody could control.

"After working with the medical team it turns out he's suffered an ACL injury. Its a blow first and foremost for Angel, a player who has given so much to the club over the past ten years.

"He still has an immense amount of quality and provides leadership on and off the pitch. Our thoughts are with him at this time but knowing the person he is he is already focused on his recovery and preparation for surgery.

"I've got no doubts Angel will bounce back strong but in terms of his presence it's something we'll be reviewing in January to monitor how his recovery has gone," Figueira told www.aucklandcityfc.com.

Auckland City FC is next in action on Sunday 1 November 2020 when they travel south to face ISPS Handa Men's Premiership rivals Hamilton Wanderers at Porritt Stadium.

The game kicks off at 1.00pm NZST.
