CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand - Auckland City FC are National Youth League champions for the third season in a row thanks to a Deandre Vollenhoven goal in a 2-1 win over Canterbury on a day of nail-biting drama across the country.

Auckland City FC needed a win to cement an historic third consecutive title and all was going to plan when Aidan Carey stabbed home the opening goal on the half hour mark at English Park.

The Junior Navy Blues were denied by top goalkeeping from Harrison Rowe and also saw a Bradley Wilson shot hit the post in the second half.

But the roof came crashing in after an hour when Seth Simpson grabbed a shock equaliser, and with Waitakere United taking a 1-0 lead over Hamilton Wanderers, the title pressure mounted.

Jackson Woods, who missed the bulk of the campaign, was thrown on midway through the second half in a desperate search of a way back into the match.

Canterbury United put in stubborn resistance against wave after wave of Junior Navy Blues attacks until Deandre Vollenhoven delivered the decisive blow four minutes into additional time to send the Auckland City FC support into raptures.

At almost the same time, Hamilton Wanderers went 2-1 up over Waitakere United but that result was rendered meaningless as Bright and his players got over the line in the most dramatic of circumstances.

The National Youth League run of 19 seasons now comes to an end with the Junior Navy Blues the most successful team during it's lifetime with seven titles, including winning back-to-back titles three times, the only club to do so.
