Speranza joins Ecuadorian top flight

AUCKLAND, New Zealand - Camilo Speranza has left Auckland City FC to take up a senior coaching role with Guayaquil City FC in Ecuador's Serie A.

Speranza spent one season with the Navy Blues guiding the club's youth team to their sixth National Youth League title while also playing a key role in driving the club's inaugural Academy programme.

The Uruguayan's contribution to Auckland City FC while brief remains significant with his work being continued by Nic Downes, Ivan Vicelich and Jose Figueira.

Speranza was thought to be assuming a Technical Director role with the South American side but looks set to serve as assistant coach.

Guayaquil City FC sit 11th in the 16-team Ecuadorian top flight and features former Argentina U-20 international Michael Hoyos and former Uruguay U-20 international Gonzalo Mastriani.

Speranza summed up his approach to coaching succinctly:

"Coaches don't teach anything. What we can do is generate a context in which learning occurs.

"Learning is a process, not a concrete act.

"I generate a context where the players are going to act and the learning will take place through the interaction between the players and the tasks.

"Football is played. It is not a task, it does not work. Football is played. These are the dimensions and these are the norms. Let's play," he said.

Auckland City FC chairman Ivan Vuksich was disappointed to see Speranza depart Kiwitea Street but understood his decision to return to fulltime professional football.

"Camilo did a great job with our Academy and the Junior Navy Blues, a job that culminated in a National Youth League title win.

"His professionalism, dedication and work ethic were beyond reproach and it is no surprise that his talents have been recognised elsewhere.

"Like so many people who have made a mark at Auckland City FC, Camilo's return to the professional game underlines our reputation as a club with high standards that can act as a spring board to the next level for coaches and players alike.

"We wish Camilo all the very best in his next challenge with Guayaquil City FC in Ecuador," he said.
